Moduls of Information Retrieval Education
Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences provides lessons on information retrieval as follows:
1. Library Info (duration 1 hour)
- Introduction of library services
- Patron registration (library card)
- Introduction of resources database (Kymi)
- Short introduction of electronic resources (types of resources, the Nelli portal)
- Library Tour (e.g. the reading room, shelf classification, automatic check-in/check-out machine)
2. Basics of Information Retrieval (duration 2 hours)
- General strategies for information retrieval
- Use of basic databases (e.g. Kymi, Arto, Linda)
- Information retrieval exercises
3. Field-specific Resources Provided by Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences and University of Helsinki (duration 2 hours)
- General strategies for information retrieval (if necessary, similar to those in section 2)
- Introduction of field-specifiv databases
- the Nelli portal
- Information retrieval exercises
- Always customised to meet the needs of the participants
4. Guidance for Thesis Writing (duration 2 hours)
- Revision of information retrieval strategies (if necessary, similar to section 2)
- Thesis search (universities, universities of applied schiences)
- Search for Finnish literature and articles, and literature and articles in English
- Use of the Nelli portal in information retrieval
- Information retrieval for one´s own topic
- Always customised to meet the needs of the participants
5. Doctoral Studies (duration 2 hours)
- Revision of information retrievat strategies (if necessary)
- Focus on the search of scientific resources from databases
- Previous information retrieval skills of the participants' are recognised with particular care
- Always customised to meet the needs of the participants
6. Personal guidance in information retrieval aimed at, for example, the researchers of Vellamo. The content is always customised to meet the needs of the participants.
