A tribute to the Kymenlaakso forest industry

It all started with a tree, a river and a vision.
These were the makings of excellent export products and the entire local identity.
Shadows of smokestacks, livelihood for generations and branching out towards a renewable future.
These stories have roots.

The experiential exhibition Shifting to wood turns the spotlight on the everyday heroes working in an industry that brings together generations. Its silhouette continues to be an integral part of the Kymenlaakso cityscape as well as the mental landscape of the local residents. The exhibition focuses on a precious raw material that is used to create something that is even more meaningful.

Together with wood, the exhibition carries visitors from one decade to the next. This journey takes us from the forest to the factories that have their own culture, lasting from one shift to the next. These decades are full of successes and failures, happy and bittersweet memories.

The visionaries along the production lines discover new forms for their products as well as routes to carry them from Kymenlaakso to everywhere in the world. Wood has been turned into truly fascinating stories, and it is now their turn to be discovered.

The exhibition is part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Kymenlaakso forest industry.
